Yerba santa - Eriodictyon californicum (in the Hydrophyllaceae or Waterleaf family)

Part used: Leaves.

Taste/smell: Sweet, sticky, aromatic.

Tendencies: Warming.

Dosage: Infusion: 1 heaping teaspoon per cup of water, infused for 25 minutes; or 1:4 dry liquid extract: 10-50 drops 1-4 times per day.

Mental picture and specific indications: Yerba santa is indicated in respiratory and digestive weakness.

Use: (a) Expectorant, (b) Bronchodilator, (c) Antimicrobial, (d) Carminative.

Yerba santa is used for colds, laryngitis, bronchitis, asthma, hay fever and any condition where there is a cough with poor expectoration. It aids in digestion and is used for the treatment of bladder infections. Externally, it can be applied to bruises, inflammations and rheumatic pain. All resinous liquid extracts of herbs like yerba santa will precipitate in water and stick to the container or glass.
