Carum carvi

Caraway - Carum carvi (in the Apiaceae family, previously Umbelliferae family)

Part used: Seed.

Taste/smell: Spicy and aromatic.

Dosage: Infusion: 1 teaspoon of crushed seed per cup of water; or 1:3.5 dry liquid extract: 20-30 drops 1-4 times per day in a little water.

Use: (a) Antispasmodic, (b) Carminative, (c) Stomachic, (d) Lactagogue.

Caraway seeds are used for upset stomachs with gas and belching.

The constituents include a fixed oil, protein, carbohydrate, flavonoids and an essential oil that contains carvone and limonene.
